Notes: John was at Tucson Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. The track was slick, and he qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.77. He improved to 6.60/204.78 in the first round, to beat Jim Liberman's 6.82. Another 6.60 in the second round beat Rick Johnson while a semifinal 6.61 advanced when Raymond Beadle broke a rear end in the "Blue Max." In the final, he faced Tom Hoover, and Collins ran his best time of the weekend, a 6.58/221.12, to take the victory. John qualified #5 at the NHRA Winternationals at 6.293/231.36 and then won a round one matchup with John Lombardo, 6.250/228.42 to 6.80/138. He lost to Don Prudhomme in round two, 6.14/203 to John's 12-second shut-off pass. He didn't race another NHRA national event until Indy, where his 6.281/225.56 was the third alternate. That was John's last NHRA national event of the year. | Second quickest at SIR '77 64 FCs at 6.38, after John Lombardo's meet's quickest 6.24. They met in the final, where people (me included) climbed over the fence into the grass, and some blind drunk stepped into Lombardo's beams for an instant red light, giving Collins the win. - Joe Moore |
