I just heard George Ray died over the weekend. I took my two boys down there a couple years ago to race. Glad we did now. Let me just say, that was one great experience.

That was a great read. Excellent reporting with soul, Bret. The story and the pictures...my God, the way that track is set up...I'm used to being at least 50 or 60 feet away from the cars when they blast off, but that track...you can reach out and high-five the drivers when they go past...I LOVE IT!!!! I bookmarked that story. Thanks. WC1

Without exaggeration, I can testify that, when sitting on the left-lane "log", you can stretch your leg out and touch your shoe to the slick of the car staged in front of you.

I decided not to include it in the tribute but there has never been a fatality at George's. Those fences can stop a freight train; I've seen cars hit 'em and get torn to shreds.

I'd love to do it...my name is Wildcat...
It's a shame this thread is called More Sad News...it's a celebration of this great man and the decades of fun he gave to folks...He JUST DID IT!
I believe his wife is going to keep it going...Cheers, WC1

We all salute George Ray... This sport is never going to see another individual like George Ray... George personified the "grass roots" independent drag racing movement with his "outlaw" Wildcat Drag Strip... He was a pioneer of the pioneers... Bret wrote a very touching & informative piece in remembrance of George Ray... Heaven definitely holds a place for George Ray, because it was George Ray who gave us a slice of drag racing heaven here on earth... Diana
