IHRA Budds Creek: Janis Clinches
Championship, Event Title, and World Record

By Paula Motolik and Bobby Bennett

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - It was a dream weekend for Mike Janis at the CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals, at Maryland International Raceway. Janis soloed to his fourth victory of the season, with a win over Shannon "The Iceman" Jenkins, who broke while preparing to run in the finals of Pro Modified.

The 45-year-old Janis, from Lancaster, N.Y., also clinched his first Mopar Pro Modified World Championship during the final round of qualifying Saturday, then capped off the weekend with a World Record 6.112 second elapsed time.

"To get the record and clinch the championship in one weekend was a dream. I never would have believed that we could go a 6.11. I had originally thought that we only had a 6.16 second run in our engine," Janis said. "Everything just went great this weekend."

2000 World Champion, Fred Hahn, recorded a new speed World Record with a 231.20 mph run.

The Funny Car elapsed time record was reset by Dale Brand of Sully, Iowa, en route to his third win of the season over John Vouros, of Victor, N.Y. Brand took the win with 5.773 second run at 241.84 mph. In a runner-up effort, Vouros made a 5.847 second 239.19 mph pass.

Brand recorded a 5.722-second time to claim the new World Record.

"We had an incredible weekend. Things have been going well for us and we are real proud of our performance. We have been working on our program all summer and it has come together well for us," Brand said following his win.

Other winners included Brian Gahm, of Lucasville, Ohio, in Sunoco Pro Stock, and Ray Price, of Raleigh, N.C., in the finals of Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley-Davidson.

Gahm was the talk of the pits, not only defeating newly crowned World Champion, Gene Wilson, but also taking his second win of the year by defeating first-time finalist, Terry Leggett. Gahm ran the fastest lap of his career in the finals, posting a 6.592-second run at 211.10 mph for the win. Leggett scored the runner-up spot with a 6.695 second 207.78 mph run.

Price took his second win this season in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley-Davidson, defeating Johnny Mancuso, of Houston, Texas, in the finals. In an all-out battle to the end, Price took the win with a 6.607 second run at 191.40 mph. Mancuso recorded a 6.749-second run at 206.83 mph.
