The thing is, you just cant put in a tall gear just cause it sounds right. the whole combo has to be taken into consideration. If i was running 13.4 static and ran 85 to90%, id have a 3.50 gear in it to burn fuel. With an engine that runs at 65 to7000 and has a static of 14.7,but has heads that run out of air above 7000, you have to make it think its got larger heads than it has.The only way to do that is to change cam timing around and put about a 3.70 gear in to keep the rpms in its usuable range.Keeping the engine between 6000 launch and 7500 shift makes the fuel system easy to tune as you dont have to worry about it bogging and excessively loading the engine when the fuel system isnt setup for it. Going higher on gear i can just put a couple of thou smaller main in it or so and work on the hi speed. Its not rocket science. Just do what the engine tells you it wants. With a high static comp you cant run much % as it will make it detonation sensitive, so around 20 to maybe 25% is about it and even then you need to back off the timing unlike a high % that needs lots of lead time.Right now the a/fuel cars are around 13.4 static and that about all they can stand along with 450 psi fuel pressure.

That's what I'm sayin', man...great post...you guys took a whole lot of data home from that trip and it's gonna pay off in spades when y'all make the adjustments. Meanwhile, the posts Leon is making are a revelation. This is knowledge you ain't gonna learn from no book. This is high performance, actually taking place right here. Thanks for those posts, Leon. I understood everything you said and that thing is gonna be a terror when you get it set just right. Cheers, WC1

Good post Leon.

I keep forgetting that you guys aren't running a huffer. It's been a while since I've run naturally aspirated, but you're right - you have a much more limited RPM range because you're relying on the head's ability to get air into the motor.
