Our shakedown runs turned out to be ones that we are happy with. Over the Winter months, we made numerous changes to the car. One was a new engine block to replace the one we broke last season. Another change was to install some new lightweight fiberglass doors and fenders. We are starting this season off with a change in tire manufacturers also, from M/T to Hoosier.
After warming things up in the pits, we headed up to the staging lanes for our first pass. This was to be a "motor only" pass to get things seated in the new engine. The burnout procedure was also changed to a much shorter one. This seamed to work great by heating the new tires up just the right amount. Pulled into the beams, hit the trans brake button, and put that right pedal on the floor. The car launched great, a little fat due to no spray, and as soon as the engine got over 5500 it just woke up. It went straight as an arrow all the way to the finish line. That felt pretty good. (9.29 at 151.82)
Towed back to the pits for some between rounds maintenance, and we were ready for another go at the tree.
This time we installed a fresh full bottle of nitrous, all heated up to the required 1200psi. Sitting in the staging lanes gave the bottle a chance to cool down, and in turn lowered the pressure. Same burnout procedure, and inched back into the beams. This launch felt the same as the last one, but seeing as how we had a very soft tune-up in the engine, I chocked it up to that. What I didn't know was that a power wire had pulled out of the first stage relay not letting it come on. The second stage hit at about the 1/8th mile mark, and I just rode it out to the stripe. (9.24 at 152.25)
Back in the pits, I discovered the problem, fixed it, checked everything out, and loaded up a new bottle for the next pass.
The launch this time felt much better with almost no tire slippage, and the 7000 shift light came up real fast. Shifted into second, and the second stage came on for another little push. A second later both stages shut down for some unknown reason, so I rode this one out also. (9.04 at 152.23)
The day ended on a positive note because we were able to start the car up and drive it to the trailer. We know what we need to do, and by next weekend things should be all set and ready for another go at the tree.
