I'd say the best comedic side kick in TV history.
Certainly the most well known.

I supppose Johnny Carson still would have been successful, but with Ed McMahon working his cues and making wisecracks to his schtick every night, Carson became an easy hit...his team on camera: Ed McMahon, Tommy Newsome and Doc Severinsen, were each well-known and respected in their fields and capable of having their own winning formula, and each one of them branched out, but it was the Tonight Show and Carson's kingdom that made their bones in my opinion. Ed's work on the annual Muscular Dystrophy telethon with Jerry Lewis was an outstanding humanitarian gesture. Rest in peace, Ed, and thanks, WC1
