intro and car info

Postby Buffjhsn » Mon Jun 19, 2006 11:12 pm

so did this thing ever take off and run??? we need to know!!!
ok guys, this is my first post here so i thought i would fill you in. the car that vic posted belongs to me. he was kind enough to post it here and ask for your expertise.

i believe last thing he posted for me was before we changed the needle and seats. we put .150's in it and made some other changes and still had no success. i changed carbs, jetting, spacers, ran my super sucker etc. anyways the car was still a pig. it went 9.30's. i took it home and leaked it down. the worst cylinder was 5%. i was running conventional rings.

the next weekend i took it to the track and the only thing i did was put some other plugs in it and back the fuel pressure back down to about 8 lbs.

anyways it was slower still. it slowed down to 9.40's. man was i making progress or what??? i pulled the plugs and they were black with oil! so i took this boat anchor home and started tearing into it. once i got the intake off i noticed that the gasket was discolored. i was running a mr.gasket 1/8 thick gasket. when it's new it's grey. now it was black.

i took a light and shined down my runners of my heads. to my shock there was actually oil and fuel (i run gas) sitting around my valves. i took a q-tip and rubbed around my valves to make sure that they were not leaking oil. everything was dry.

to make a long story short, the bolts were binding up on the holes of the intake, so i wasn't getting a very good seal. this was causing my engine to suck oil into the runner of the head. this was due tho my machinist angle milling too much off my intake.

the next weekend it rained .i hate ohio weather. i slotted my bolt hole, changed brands of intake gaskets to felpro, changed my 4-link around a little bit, and hooked up a pan e-vac system to my headers. took the car to the track and it ran 9.31 first pass. next pass it wen 9.27. then another 27. got my butt kicked first round. i fell asleep on the line.

i still wasnt happy with the performance w/the motor so i pulled the plugs again and they still had oil on them. so i did a compression check. it went as follows:
1)180 (2)180
3)190 (4)190
5)190 (6)190
7)190 (8)210

so i did the only logical thing...i pulled it all apart!!!! i took a bore gage and measured the bore and they had taper in them. i looked at the top rings and they look like they have never seated at all.

i took my block to another machine shop and hap him measure the bores and he came up w/as much as .002 taper in them. anyways he honed it for me and trued it all up.

the rings i was using were perfect circle. i had never used them before but i am NOT impressed. i ordered some Total Seal gapless and am gonna give them a shot. i hope they work better.

ok enough about my headache here's some info on me:

my name is Corey Hampshire and i am 20 yrs old. i have been around the sport of drag racing all my life and have literally grown up at the local track. i work in a little machine shop as a cnc machinist and have been there for 3 yrs. i am going to college to become a tool and die maker.

the car is actually my fathers. he builds the motors and transmissions for it. His name is Jeff. unfortunately he is about computer illiterate so i get stuck doing all the typing and e-mailing.

i have learned everything i know from my father and spend just as much time working on this PIG as him. i do whatever he asks and whatever i can to help. my area of "expertise" is the 4-link. i still got a long way to go with it but i do ok. between the two of us we have actually rebuilt the entire car and are in the process of building one for me to race.

i am looking forward to learning as much as i can from you guys and probably will just sit back and try to soak all this knowledge in. i have been lurking around here for a while and reading some past posts. not a lot of it pertains to me and my combination, but it's still informative nonetheless.

thanks for your interest and helpful suggestions. there have been some really good ideas. hopefully some new rings will solve the problem!!!!
