Duane Yates and Danny Smith

Postby WildcatOne » Tue May 26, 2009 7:17 pm

Two well-known singers and musicians in our area both died last week.
Duane Yates was the singer for the Boogie Kings. My friend Doug Ardoin founded the band in 1955 and throughout the years they have maintained a standard of excellence that few others have reached. Duane was greatly admired by Pee Wee and us all as a terrific singer and entertainer. Rest in peace, Duane.

There is inexplicably no information on Danny's passing or on his career in music on the internet. Danny Smith was an institution in Galveston, known by everyone for the last 50 years. He played keyboards and sang. I met Danny once, at our trombone player Herb Richter's memorial service in November 2007. He sang with us in a rich baritone voice and shook my hand and complimented me. Other guys in our band have played with Danny many times over the years, but I never had the opportunity to jam with Danny in a professional setting. Rest in peace.

These men were Pee Wee Bowen's peers and friends and he regarded them both with respect and kindness. My condolences to their families. WC1

Sorry to hear of the passing of these gentlemen, and glad that we can provide some small place on the internet to announce it. Thanks to you for that, John. bp
